A cultural center is set to be constructed in Larnaca for 30 million euros, with the architectural firm Foster + Partners leading the project. Petrolina has provided approximately 4,000 square meters of coastal land for the development, with significant funding expected from the developer behind the Land of Tomorrow Larnaca initiative and the European Union.
Founded in 1967 by Norman Foster, Foster + Partners is based in London. The cultural center will be situated on a site that previously housed fuel tanks, close to the American University of Cyprus and the Jumbo Mall. A preliminary design for the center is slated to be unveiled by September 2025. The center will comprise three main sections: the Art Center, the Design Center, and the Museum of People.
Art Center
- Main hall: This versatile space can accommodate up to 1,500 guests and is adaptable for various events such as operas, concerts, conferences, and ceremonies.
- Small stage: Designed for 150 spectators, catering to performances by independent theater and art groups.
- Two exhibition areas: Modern platforms with a curatorial approach that extends beyond visual arts.
Design Center
The aim of this center is to merge traditional crafts from Larnaca, such as ceramics, weaving, and lace, with contemporary design and technology, including 3D printing. It will serve as a collaborative environment for designers and artisans, functioning as an incubator for innovative business ideas in folk art.
Museum of People
Conceptualized by Joseph Hadzikiriakos, the Director of the Larnaca Archive, the Museum will adopt an anti-museum format, emphasizing contemporary narratives from everyday lives. Its exhibits will feature interactive installations infused with elements of modern art.
