Cyprus Minister of Transport Alexis Vafiadis has unveiled a new plan for the development of Larnaca Port and Marina. After three unsuccessful attempts over the past 20 years, the government has decided to fund the modernization from the state budget rather than rely on private investors. Each project will be implemented separately, with tenders held for each.
Port Development Through 2055
The plan focuses primarily on modernizing the port, which plays a crucial role in the economy of Larnaca and the country as a whole. Experts proposed three potential approaches:
-
Upgrade the existing loading and unloading infrastructure.
-
Extend the port’s length, mainly through the northern quay, deepen the port area, and reorganize adjacent land for improved vessel servicing.
-
Build new quays and infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels, with measures to significantly reduce unloading times.
Options 2 and 3 are considered sufficient to meet the port’s needs at least until 2055, with Option 2 selected as the optimal choice.
Marina Modernization
Three development options have been proposed for Larnaca Marina:
-
Maintain the current capacity of 340 vessels and improve existing infrastructure, without adding new berths.
-
Expand the area to increase capacity by 200 vessels.
-
Further expand by 300–400 vessels and create facilities to service yachts up to 50 meters in length.
Authorities have chosen Option 2 as the preferred solution.
Land Use Around the Port and Marina
Previously, foreign investors planned to develop hotels, residential complexes, and leisure areas with restaurants, cafés, and bars on land adjacent to the port and marina. Experts now recommend dedicating this space to port infrastructure, as adequate storage and cargo handling areas are essential for the port’s efficient operation.
Larnaca Mayor Andreas Viras emphasized that residents hope the land near the port and marina will be used for commercial and tourist development, creating new jobs, business facilities, services, and public spaces.
Next Steps
Minister of Transport Vafiadis confirmed that a key decision has been made: Larnaca Port and Marina will be modernized using government funds, without relying on foreign investment. Public consultations with Larnaca residents will take place soon, followed by finalization of the project and announcement of tenders.
