Parliament on Thursday approved the creation of a casino in Cyprus albeit with several amendments to the government bill.
The bill was passed with the votes of 29 MPs belonging to ruling DISY, DIKO, and EDEK. Twenty-two lawmakers voted against, including House President Yiannakis Omirou who comes from EDEK.
It provides for the creation of a main casino resort and satellite establishments. It bans granting credit to players, and includes regulations regarding Cypriots.It also prohibits its creation on state land.
The government had said it would invite tenders within a month of the bill’s approval.
